A friend of mine, James, a creative director at The Good Agency in Shanghai, shared a profoundly meaningful idea: a project dedicated to supporting child burn survivors across China. ¶ Moved by the opportunity to contribute something purposeful amid all of the commercial work, I wholeheartedly embraced the initiative. There’s an indescribable energy that comes from using your skills to uplift others—it fills the soul in ways words can’t capture. ¶ Just a few days later, we found ourselves in Beijing, spending time at a hospital with these brave children whose courage redefined strength. Our mission was simple yet profound: to bring moments of joy to their days and gather material for a social campaign titled “Laughter Is the Best Cure.” We played, listened, and shared stories, their smiles lighting up the room even as my heart ached and my eyes filled with tears for their struggles. Behind the camera, I’d often step away to collect myself—overwhelmed by their strength—only to return with the brightest smile I could muster, determined to give them the lightness they deserved. ¶ The project blossomed into an emotional exhibition at Shanghai’s Art Labor Gallery, where the children’s portraits and stories took centre stage. Thanks to Tencent’s generous sponsorship and a compassionate collector who purchased the entire series, the initiative raised critical support for their care and recovery.
